What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session: A Beginner's Guide

Starting therapy can feel like a big step, and it's completely normal to have questions or even a bit of apprehension. At Nicole Groves, LPC, my goal is to make your first session—and every session after—as comfortable and productive as possible. So, what can you expect when you walk through that door (or log on for your virtual session)?

1. The Intake Process: Getting to Know You

Your first session is primarily an intake, where we focus on gathering essential information. This isn't just about paperwork; it's about understanding your unique story. I'll ask about your current concerns, your personal history, family background, and any past experiences with therapy. This helps me get a holistic picture of who you are and what you hope to achieve. You're in control of what you share, and there's no pressure to disclose anything you're not ready for.

2. Confidentiality: Your Safe Space

One of the most crucial aspects of therapy is confidentiality. I'll explain the limits of confidentiality, which are very few and exist primarily to ensure safety (e.g., if there's an imminent risk of harm to yourself or others, or child/elder abuse). Beyond those specific legal exceptions, what you share in session stays in session. This creates a safe, judgment-free space for you to explore your thoughts and feelings openly.

3. Setting Goals: Your Therapeutic Compass

Together, we'll discuss what brings you to therapy and what your goals are. Do you want to manage anxiety, heal from trauma, improve relationships, or navigate a major life transition? Having clear goals helps us create a roadmap for our work together, ensuring that therapy is tailored to your specific needs and aspirations.

4. My Approach: Collaborative and Affirming

I'll also give you a brief overview of my therapeutic approach. As a trauma-informed therapist specializing in EMDR and DBT, I aim to provide an inclusive and affirming environment, especially for the LGBTQ+, polyamory, and kink communities. This means our sessions will be collaborative, respectful, and focused on providing you with practical tools for growth and healing.

5. Q&A: Your Chance to Ask Anything

This session is also your opportunity to ask me any questions you have—about my experience, my methods, or the therapy process itself. It's important that you feel comfortable and confident in our therapeutic relationship.

Remember, taking that first step is a sign of incredible strength. I'm here to meet you where you are and support you on your journey.
